When booking on-line you can reserve a pack for more than one four hour rental period. If you are on the trail with the pack and want to keep it longer than the allotted time, please call the office to see if the pack is reserved for the period after you are scheduled to return it. If not, you are welcome to use it for another 4 hour period for the $30.00 rental fee.

GPS stands for Global Positioning System. A GPS unit is an electronic device that can determine a location on the planet within a 20 foot accuracy. It receives latitude and longitude coordinates by using radio frequencies from several satellites that orbit the earth. You can use them to navigate from one location to another. Some units have built in maps, electronic compasses, and other features based on the quality of the device.

Geocaching is a high tech treasure hunt using a GPS device. There are thousands of caches (or treasures) found all over the world, even in your neighborhood. Visit www.geocaching.com to access these cache locations and program or download them into your GPS device.

Cache is a term used in hiking or camping when hiding and/or storing provisions. A cache in Geocaching terms is a small, water tight container containing a log book and small toys. When a cache is found, participants typically take an item and leave an item and sign the log book.

You will be able to find 3-5 caches in the 4 hour rental period.

If you have more than 2 children and are planning to find more that 5 caches, you may want to purchase an extra bag of toys. Each additional bag of toys has 10 items and costs $5.00.

It’s pretty easy to get started geocaching on your own. You just need a GPS which you can pick up at any outdoor retailer. REI and Sportsman’s Warehouse have several models available and have staff that can help you pick the right unit for you. Once you have a GPS, go on-line to
www.geocaching.com. They have simple instructions about how to get started geocaching and all the details about seeking, finding, and hiding caches. You will need to create a user account to gain access to the GPS coordinates.
